Beyond the IITs: Top Engineering Colleges You Can Get Into Through JEE Main

Let's address the elephant in the room: most JEE aspirants are obsessed with IITs. I get it — the brand, the alumni network, the placement statistics. But here's the thing: only about 17,000 seats exist across all IITs (B.Tech programs), and JEE Advanced sees over 1.5 lakh candidates. The math doesn't favour most students.
But that's not the end of the story. Through JEE Main, you can get into NITs (31 of them), IIITs (26), and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutions, about 30). Some of these are genuinely excellent — and a few are better than the lower-ranked IITs in specific branches.
The NITs: India's Other Engineering Powerhouses
NITs (National Institutes of Technology) are centrally funded, follow a uniform academic structure, and have solid industry connect. Let me break down the ones worth knowing:
NIT Trichy (NIT Tiruchirappalli) — consistently ranked the best NIT, and for good reason. Its Computer Science and Electrical branches have placements that rival several IITs. Average package for CSE: around 12-15 LPA. Top recruiters include Microsoft, Amazon, Texas Instruments. For a General category student, you need roughly AIR 500-1500 in JEE Main for CSE here.
NIT Karnataka (Surathkal) — often called NITK, this is the second-most sought-after NIT. Excellent IT and ECE branches. The campus is beautiful (right on the Arabian Sea coast, which sounds like a minor point but actually affects student life a lot). CSE closing rank is usually around 1500-2500 for General.
NIT Warangal — one of the oldest NITs (established 1959), with strong alumni network across Indian and global tech companies. CSE, ECE, and Metallurgical Engineering are its strengths. AIR 1000-2500 for CSE (General).
NIT Rourkela — slightly less hyped but excellent in core branches. Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical here are among the best in the country. If you're into core engineering (not just IT), this is a serious contender. AIR 3000-6000 for CSE, but core branches go up to AIR 15000+.
MNIT Allahabad (MNNIT) — strong CS/IT placements, decent core branches. CSE closing rank around 2500-4000.
Other NITs worth knowing: NIT Calicut, NIT Jaipur (MNIT), NIT Nagpur (VNIT), NIT Bhopal (MANIT). All of these have solid CSE closing ranks in the 2000-5000 range and offer genuine value.
The IIITs: IT-Focused Excellence
IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) are newer than NITs but have carved out a niche in CS and IT education. Don't confuse them with IIIT Hyderabad (which is a different, more research-focused institution with its own admission).
IIIT Allahabad (IIIT-A) — arguably the best IIIT for placements. CSE average package is around 14 LPA, with top offers touching 40+ LPA. The reason: IIIT-A has been around since 1999, has matured its curriculum, and has deep industry connect. AIR 2000-4000 for General CSE.
IIIT Delhi — not technically through JoSAA (it has its own counselling), but accepts JEE Main scores. Known for its CS and Applied Maths programs. Placements are strong (average CSE package 16+ LPA). It's also in the heart of Delhi, which helps with internships. AIR 1000-3000 for General CSE.
IIIT Bangalore — similar to IIIT Delhi, has its own admission but uses JEE Main scores. Elite CS/IT focus, placements rival IITs. But you need a top rank — AIR 500-2000 for its integrated M.Tech programs.
IIIT Gwalior (ABV-IIITM) — offers a unique 5-year integrated B.Tech+M.Tech program. Good placements, smaller batch size (which some students prefer). AIR 5000-8000 for General.
Other IIITs: IIITDM Jabalpur, IIITDM Kancheepuram, IIIT Una, IIIT Vadodara, IIIT Kota. Placement quality varies — the older IIITs (Allahabad, Gwalior) are clearly better than the newer ones.
GFTIs: The Underrated Option
GFTIs are government-funded institutions that take JEE Main scores. Some are genuinely excellent:
PEC Chandigarh (Punjab Engineering College) — one of the oldest engineering colleges in India (established 1921). Strong in CS, ECE, Mechanical. The "PEC tag" still carries weight in North India recruitment. AIR 4000-7000 for General CSE.
IIEST Shibpur (formerly BESU) — located near Kolkata, heritage institution. Good in CS, IT, and Aerospace Engineering. AIR 8000-12000 for General CSE.
JMI (Jamia Millia Islamia) — Delhi-based, strong CS and ECE programs. Placements have improved significantly in recent years. AIR 6000-10000 for General CSE.
SPA Delhi and SPA Bhopal (School of Planning and Architecture) — if architecture or planning is your interest, these are premier. AIR 5000-15000 for B.Arch programs.
What Rank You Actually Need (General Category, CSE)
Here's a realistic rank-to-college mapping for Computer Science (General category, based on 2024-2025 JoSAA data):
- AIR 1-500: Top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras CS)
- AIR 500-2000: Top NIT CSE (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal), IIIT-A, IIIT Delhi
- AIR 2000-5000: Other top NIT CSE (Calicut, Jaipur, Allahabad), IIIT Gwalior
- AIR 5000-10000: Mid NIT CSE, PEC Chandigarh, JMI, IIEST
- AIR 10000-20000: Lower-ranked NIT CSE, newer IIITs
- AIR 20000-50000: NIT core branches (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical)
For reserved categories (OBC, SC, ST, EWS), the rank requirements relax significantly — often by 2-3x. Check JoSAA's official CSAB data for precise closing ranks per category.
The Reality Check Nobody Gives You
Here's what coaching institutes won't tell you: the gap between "Tier 1" (IITs) and "Tier 2" (top NITs/IIITs) has narrowed significantly in the last 5 years. The reason is simple — the tech industry has democratised. A CSE student from NIT Trichy has access to the same Google, Microsoft, Amazon interviews as an IIT Bombay student. The on-campus placement scenarios are genuinely comparable.
Where IITs still pull ahead: research opportunities, startup ecosystem access, and the "IIT brand" for higher studies abroad. If your goal is a job in tech, the NIT/IIIT path is completely viable.
What matters more than the college name: your branch choice. A CS student from NIT Calicut will likely outearn a Metallurgy student from IIT Dhanbad in the first 5 years. Choose your branch strategically, not just the college.
How to Use This Information
When JoSAA counselling opens, have a priority list ready. Don't just rank colleges by "prestige" — rank them by the branch you'll get. Use the previous year's closing ranks (available on the JoSAA website) to estimate where you'll land.
And one last thing: visit the campus if you can. A college's website and rankings tell you one story; walking the campus tells you another. The NIT Trichy campus culture is different from NIT Surathkal, which is different from NIT Warangal. These things matter for four years of your life.
